Imagine two people with very similar lives. Let’s call them Bill and Ted.

Bill and Ted are both busy professionals with demanding careers. Both are married and have two kids.

Both are actively involved in their communities and in their kids’ activities.

After they’ve completed all the extra stuff after school and work, each of them still has to cook dinner, clean up the kitchen, and help with homework before checking a few final work emails.

Finally, it’s 9pm and here’s where the lives of Bill and Ted diverge.

Bill settles down with his wife and they enjoy a bit of tele and a glass of wine before heading off to bed, while Ted sits down at the kitchen table in an attempt to get to grips with the family finances.

Ted faces the following types of questions:

  1. How do I invest?
  2. What fund should I select?
  3. What the hell is a ‘fund’?
  4. Do I have the right kind of insurances?
  5. Am I saving enough to help the kids get onto the property ladder?
  6. Do I have enough saved to retire?
  7. Should I worry about what’s happening in the stock market this week?
  8. How do I know when it’s time to make a change to any of these things?
  9. Should I pay more off the Mortgage or should I invest?
  10. What do I do about my old pensions?

Ted spends hours reading books, checking websites, and reviewing reports, and he endures the associated stresses too.

He tries to understand every aspect of his financial life, so he can make smart financial decisions.

It’s a never-ending process that he repeats each night before going to bed.

This is starting to have a negative impact on his work and family life too, because Ted is not spending enough quality time with his wife and he is tired and stressed at work because he is not sleeping well.

Now, assuming we all agree on the importance of finding the answers to the above questions, and of avoiding the knock on effects of not being able to do so, the next question is, how can Bill just go to bed without a second thought!?

Well, that’s because Bill chose a different path. Bill chose to work with a trusted Lifestyle Financial Planner, and together they created a Financial Masterplan which serves as the baseline for a pragmatic, collaborative financial discussion.

As a result, Bill can spend time on all the other important things in his life, like his career, his family, and enjoying his Lifestyle.

Looking at the difference in the lives of Bill and Ted, I have one question for you: What’s it worth to you to be able to go to bed at night without having to worry about your financial life, just like Bill can?

Is it worth an adult discussion over a coffee sometime?

If so, mines with plenty of milk and no sugar.

Until next time…
